King Chess Club - Grade 1 |
|
|
Welcome, King Chess Team - Grade 1 section. King Chess Club is one of the top teams in the state. Last year, our Grade 1 section team won 10th in state.
The key to winning at State is to practice more than other teams. Attending chess club every week is a good start. But playing only once a week is not enough to prepare for state in Februrary. Though we are preparing for a state competion, our emphasis will always be to have fun doing.
I will try to be at Chess Club every week to meet with the Grade 1 team. One of the things we will be doing is "skill testing" to ensure that everyone on the team knows the basics. Here are some links to mini-lessons, worksheets, and mini-games for learning and re-enforcing these basics.
Basics
| Know the three ways to get out of check (mini-lesson, worksheet) | |||||||
| Know the difference between check, checkmate, and stalemate (mini-lesson, worksheet, worksheet answers) | |||||||
Know your basic checkmates! (checklist)
| |||||||
| More Mate-in-one worksheets ( with a Bishop, with a Knight ) | |||||||
| Castling | |||||||
| En-passant |
Novice Lessons
| Scholars Mate and Scholars Mate Defense | |
| Piece Values | |
| Opening Principles | |
| Discovered Attack | |
| Skewer Attack | |
| Fried Liver Attack | |
| The Pin | |
| Draws: Tournament Tactics | |
| King+Pawn versus King: Offense and Defense | |
| Notation: Long and short |
Remember! If you practice 3-4 times a week, you too can be part of a winning state chess team.
See you at chess club!

Parents!
Your kids will need a partner to practice chess at home. If skills learned are not reinforced, the child will forget.
Take advantage of this opportunity for some wonderful parent -child time. Some pointers:
| Keep it fun. Make your sessions "play time", not just practice. | |
| Know the basics yourself. Not a chess player? That can be an advantage as you learn
together. | |
| Follow progress. I will be using the skills check lists and emailing you progress reports as well as lessons covered. |
When we get closer to the date of the tournament, I will be sending out forms and travel info.
Call me if you have any questions at anytime.
