Balanced Literacy

The Washington Academy Reading program is provided through a Balanced Literacy approach.  Balanced Literacy includes instruction in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency and Vocabulary.  Each teacher provides this instruction through Guided Reading, where they work with the whole group, small groups and individuals to address specific skills.  They use many materials including text books, trade books, magazines, websites and more to achieve their instructional objectives.
